Initiative 3. Increased Participation of Underrepresented Minorities

Led by CELEST Board member George Alvarez

CELEST makes use of multiple approaches including recruiting, enabling, promoting, and supporting in order to broaden participation of women, minorities, and disabled individuals at all levels of CELEST. Group events are offered with the goal of helping undergraduates to discover new career opportunities. The core of CELEST’s strategy is the utilization of a Diversity Outreach Committee (DOC). The Chair of the committee Alvarez presents a formal diversity evaluation once a year to the Governing Board. The DOC guides the integration of diversity activities into CELEST education, research, and technology translation and facilitates links between CELEST and many external diversity opportunities.

CELEST will continue to participate in the annual meeting of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The October 2011 SACNAS meeting included an SLC plenary session organized by CELEST DOC member Professor Ramon Lopez and featured talks by CELEST faculty members Mingolla and Kantak (in previous years, other CELEST investigators have represented CELEST). Other ongoing efforts help to educate diverse individuals about CELEST as well as to inform students about the process of becoming a scientist in general, such as hosting a ten-week summer lab research experience.
